Even and Odd Numbers
Even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 and split into two equal groups: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…
Odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 and always have one left over: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9…
Practice: even or odd?
On a keyboard, press E or O.
How to tell if a number is even or odd
For small numbers, make pairs. Put the objects (or dots) in twos. If every one has a partner, the number is even. If one is left over, it’s odd. That’s what “even” means: the number shares out into two equal groups.
For any bigger number, look only at the ones digit. 738 is even because it ends in 8; 1,205 is odd because it ends in 5. The tens, hundreds and thousands don’t matter, because every ten already splits into two fives.
Counting by 2s from zero lands only on even numbers, and from one only on odd ones; see skip counting.

Every other column is shaded: the even numbers line up because they all end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. The interactive hundreds chart can shade odd and even numbers too, and hide some for practice.
Is zero even?
Yes. Zero splits into two equal groups of zero, it sits between two odd numbers (−1 and 1), and it ends in 0. Mathematicians treat it as even.
Adding and multiplying even and odd numbers
| Sum or product | Result | Example |
|---|---|---|
| even + even | even | 4 + 6 = 10 |
| odd + odd | even | 3 + 5 = 8 |
| even + odd | odd | 4 + 3 = 7 |
| even × any number | even | 4 × 3 = 12 |
| odd × odd | odd | 3 × 5 = 15 |
Subtraction follows the same pattern as addition. These rules make a quick check on an answer: 7 + 9 can’t be 15, because odd + odd is always even.

Children meet even and odd in 1st grade through counting by 2s. In 2nd grade they decide whether a group of up to 20 objects is even or odd by pairing them, and write an even number as a sum of two equal addends (8 = 4 + 4). See 1st grade and 2nd grade math practice.
Common questions
What are even and odd numbers?
Even numbers can be split into two equal groups and end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. Odd numbers always have one left over and end in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9.
How do you know if a big number is even or odd?
Look only at the ones digit. If it is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 the number is even; if it is 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 the number is odd. 738 is even and 1,205 is odd.
Is 0 an even number?
Yes. Zero splits into two equal groups of zero and ends in 0, so it is even.
Is an odd number plus an odd number even or odd?
Even. Odd + odd = even, even + even = even, and even + odd = odd. For multiplication, the product is odd only when both numbers are odd.
What grade learns even and odd numbers?
Even and odd numbers are a 2nd grade standard: children decide whether a group of up to 20 objects is even or odd by pairing them, after counting by 2s in 1st grade.
