About Num Drill

What Num Drill is, who it is for and how it works.

Num Drill is a free online math drill and practice site for elementary school, built around short adaptive quizzes and printable worksheets.

What Num Drill does

A Num Drill quiz is ten questions on one skill at one level, and takes about a minute. It times every answer and weights the next quiz toward the facts a child misses or answers slowly, so practice goes where it is needed. There are seven skills — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages and pre-algebra — each with six levels of difficulty.

Alongside the quizzes are 45 free printable worksheets with answer keys, and interactive reference tools: a multiplication chart, a number line, a place value chart, a coordinate plane and an order of operations guide.

Who it is for

Elementary students, mainly grades 1 to 6, with some early arithmetic and pre-algebra at either end. Parents use it for a few minutes of daily practice at home (see for parents); teachers use it as a warm-up and send students straight to a specific skill and level with an assignment link (see for teachers). Practice is organized by skill and by grade.

How it works, and why

Num Drill is built on retrieval practice: many short, spaced recalls beat one long session, and fluency means answering from memory rather than counting. The methodology page covers the research behind the design.

Free, with no accounts

Num Drill is free and needs no sign-up or email. A child can take a quiz as a guest, or a parent can set up a profile, which is stored on the device rather than in an account. What is stored with each quiz is listed in the FAQ.
