Who uses a 1–20 multiplication chart?
Most children learn the times tables to 12×12. A 1–20 chart is the next step for older students in grades 4 to 7: it helps with long multiplication, finding factors and common multiples, simplifying fractions, and the square numbers up to 400. It is also a handy reference for anyone doing mental math with teen numbers. Tap Show 1–12 above to fold it back to the standard chart.
Patterns that make 13 to 20 easier
- Teen times teen. For two numbers between 11 and 19, add the ones digits, multiply by 10, add 100, then add the ones digits multiplied together. 13 × 14: 3 + 4 = 7, so 100 + 70 + 12 = 182.
- The 20s are the 10s doubled: 20 × 7 = 140.
- The 19s are one group short of the 20s: 19 × 7 = 140 − 7 = 133.
- The 15s are half of the 30s: 15 × 8 = half of 240 = 120.
- The 16s double the 8s: 16 × 6 = 2 × 48 = 96.
- The 11s beyond 9: add the two digits and put the sum in the middle. 11 × 18: 1 + 8 = 9, so 198.
Square numbers from 11 to 20
The shaded diagonal holds the squares. The ones past 10 are worth knowing by heart: 11×11 = 121, 12×12 = 144, 13×13 = 169, 14×14 = 196, 15×15 = 225, 16×16 = 256, 17×17 = 289, 18×18 = 324, 19×19 = 361, 20×20 = 400.

What is a multiplication chart 1-20?
A 20 by 20 grid showing the product of every pair of numbers from 1 to 20, from 1×1 = 1 up to 20×20 = 400. Find one factor along the top and the other down the side; the square where they meet is the product.
Do children need to learn multiplication up to 20?
No. US standards expect fluency to 10×10 by the end of 3rd grade, and most classes add the 11s and 12s. Facts to 20 are useful extras for older students: the squares to 400 and the teen patterns speed up long multiplication, factoring and fractions.
What is the trick for multiplying teen numbers?
For two numbers from 11 to 19, add their ones digits and multiply by 10, add 100, then add the product of the ones digits. For 13 × 14: 3 + 4 = 7, so 100 + 70 + 12 = 182.
Is the multiplication chart 1-20 free to print?
Yes. Use 'Print this chart' for a one-page copy, or download the free filled and blank 1-20 PDFs, with no login or sign-up. Charts to 15, 30, 50 and 100 are free too.
