Fraction Chart
A fraction chart (or fraction wall) stacks one whole cut into halves, thirds, fourths and so on, all the same length. Pieces that line up are equal: 1/2 lines up with 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10 and 6/12.
The bigger the denominator, the smaller each piece: 1/3 is bigger than 1/4.

Tap any piece to see the fractions equal to it. The piece you tap and everything to its left is the fraction, so the third piece in the fourths row is 3/4.

How to read a fraction wall
- Each row is one whole. The top bar is 1; the row below it is 2 halves, then 3 thirds, down to 12 twelfths.
- The denominator is the number of pieces in the row. The numerator is how many you count from the left.
- Draw a straight line down. Every piece edge on the line is a fraction equal to the others: a line at 3/4 also passes 6/8 and 9/12.
Equivalent fractions on the chart
Rows whose denominators share a factor line up. Halves, fourths, sixths, eighths and twelfths meet at 1/2; thirds, sixths, ninths and twelfths meet at every third; fifths and tenths meet at every fifth. Sevenths and elevenths line up with nothing else on the wall, because no other denominator up to 12 is a multiple of 7 or 11.
The rule behind the picture: multiply or divide the top and bottom by the same number. 2/3 = 4/6 = 8/12 because 2 × 4 = 8 and 3 × 4 = 12. For printed practice, the equivalent fractions with a fraction wall sheet puts the wall at the top of the page.
Comparing fractions with the chart
- Same numerator: the bigger denominator is the smaller fraction, because the whole is cut into more pieces. 3/8 < 3/5.
- Same denominator: more pieces is more. 5/6 > 1/6.
- Neither the same: see whose bar reaches further, or rename both with a common denominator: 2/3 = 10/15 and 3/5 = 9/15, so 2/3 is bigger.

What is a fraction chart?
A fraction chart, or fraction wall, shows one whole and the same whole cut into halves, thirds, fourths and so on, stacked in rows of equal length. Pieces that line up are equal fractions, and longer pieces are bigger fractions.
How do you find equivalent fractions on a fraction chart?
Find the first fraction, then look straight down or up the chart. Any row whose piece edges meet the same line has an equal fraction: 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10 and 6/12 all end at the same place.
Which is bigger, 1/3 or 1/4?
1/3. The whole is cut into fewer pieces, so each piece is bigger. With the same numerator, the fraction with the smaller denominator is always bigger.
What is 3/8 as a decimal and a percent?
0.375, or 37.5%. The chart on this page lists the decimal and percent for the common fractions from halves to twelfths.
Is the fraction chart free to print?
Yes. The fraction chart PDF, a blank fraction wall to label and an equivalent fractions worksheet are free with no login, and each has a key or a table on page 2.
