Multiplication facts practice for instant recall
Multiplication facts are the foundation of every later multi-digit operation. Long division, multi-digit multiplication, fractions, percentages, ratios, pre-algebra — every one of them requires multiplication-fact recall multiple times per problem. A child without automatic recall is doing two layers of math every time: the actual problem, and the multiplication facts underneath. Num Drill is built specifically to push those facts from “can derive” to “just knows.”
What counts as a multiplication fact
A multiplication fact is the product of two single-digit numbers, e.g. 6 × 7 = 42. Most curricula include 0s through 10s (for CCSS) or 0s through 12s (for what most parents think of as “the times tables”). Multi-digit multiplication (47 × 8) is a multi-step procedure built on top of single-digit fact recall — that’s a different skill, drilled at multiplication levels 4–6.
The Num Drill levels for multiplication facts
Three levels are dedicated to fact fluency:
- Level 1. Factors 1–5 (so 5×5 is the largest product, 25). The confidence pass. Right for 2nd-grade introduction or 3rd-grade kids who need to consolidate the easiest facts before adding 6s, 7s, 8s.
- Level 2. Full 1–10 tables. The CCSS 3rd-grade target.
- Level 3. Full 1–12 tables. The fluency target most U.S. curricula expect by mid-4th grade.
Adaptive weighting at every level: facts your child gets wrong come back more often automatically, so a steady level-2 or level-3 routine surfaces and fixes the wedge facts (7×8, 6×7, 6×8, 7×9, 8×9) without you having to plan it.
Multiplication facts vs. the multiplication algorithm
These are two different skills:
- Facts: single-digit recall. Memorization. Drilled at levels 1–3.
- Algorithm: multi-step procedure for multiplying multi-digit numbers (47 × 8). Procedural skill that uses facts. Drilled at levels 4–6.
Most kids who “can’t do multi-digit multiplication” actually have a fact-fluency gap, not an algorithm gap. The multi-digit algorithm is straightforward; what breaks under speed is the underlying single-digit recall the algorithm needs three to five times per problem.
How daily multiplication-fact practice should look
The routine that builds fluency reliably:
- 5–10 minutes a day, five days a week. Spacing beats density. A long Saturday cram is materially worse than five short weekday sessions.
- One 10-question quiz at the right level. Right level = highest level your child can hit ~80% accuracy on without straining. That’s the “easy win” level for fluency-building.
- Move up only when accuracy AND speed both clear the threshold. 90%+ accuracy and under 4 seconds per question. Don’t advance on accuracy alone — if your child grinds out correct answers slowly, the recall isn’t there yet and they’ll collapse on the next level.
Multiplication facts and division facts go together
Division facts are the inverse of multiplication facts — if a child knows 6 × 7 = 42, they should also know 42 ÷ 6 = 7 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6. Drilling division facts alongside multiplication facts forces the recall in both directions and builds stronger memory. The standard 4th-grade routine alternates multiplication and division quizzes day-to-day.
